| Prelude confidently plunges the audience in the atmosphere of Rivival. Each phraise breathes the faith in great miracles: "Who has said that this badly cursed world can be changed in no way?" - man is powerless to change anything. It is true, but what is impossible to men is possible to God. |
|
Part One consists of the events described in Matthew 16:13-19. "Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?" Jesus is indeed interested in knowing people's opinion concerning His personality. There is great deal of answers to this question, but they are all full of nonsense. To the greatest regret the social consciousness is formed by ignorance, religious mysticism and prejudices. |
"But who do you say that I am?" Jesus wanted to know not only the common talk, but also the opinion of the disciples. The aria of Petra is an inspired answer and touching declaration: "You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God". The true knowledge about Jesus is not a fruit of human deductions, it is the revelation from heaven, which radically changes the person's life. Jesus gives Peter the new name - Cephas, which means "stone", the fundament of the futurechurch, that will not be prevailed by the gates of Hell. |
| Part Two shows us that the revelation about Jesus is far from being received by all the disciples. Judas had his own understanding on that score. He enters into a secret and criminal collusion with the religious leaders (Matt. 26:14-16). |
